Coaching and Osteopathic Practice

Coaching can be a guided process whereby you discover the best about yourself . In sport it is regularly recognised that resources can lie dormant and unexplored or apparent, yet not fully appreciated or developed to full potential . When dealing with pain, postural challenge, sporting/ training challenges , the aging body or any level of disability , this concept remains as true as it in sport .

The coaching process illuminates these "resources" to the client and allows the Osteopathic / Health intervention to move from a passive application of Osteopathic Techniques to a patient specific approach which can create change and an active participation in ones own health outcomes .

After receiving coaching as part of my therapy at the Reach Approach , I understood that "sustainability" was not always evident, concerning all health interventions  . The guidance at Reach  included, daily actions for health called "non negotiables " and  deep personal reflection, this changed my thoughts concerning the application of Osteopathy  . Indeed the goal should always be that clients become the major shareholders in their own health

Further education and qualification as a coach have not changed my techniques as an Osteopath, which were learned  30 years ago, and I have mastered through further learning and sharpening of those skills.

The self awareness and applied health knowledge I learned at the Reach Approach enabled me to see that the development of an approach that was synergetic , and compassionate  had a wide application; appropriately so in listening to the anatomy of the complaint , applying health education ,setting goals and outcomes .  It  currently remains a way of " living" - both inside and outside of my professional life ,

The efficacy of all treatments lies not just in the work of skilled hands and minds but in communication skills . Coaching at the Reach Approach blends  communication skills and lifestyle planning, in a beautiful partnership . The General Osteopathic Coucil (governing body of Osteopathy ) state the importance of understanding expectations and working within the patients goals.

Modern clinical work has highlighted the importance of clinicians developing this part of their skill set to be able to meet the client where they are "at", and become not just evidence based and patient centred, but patient specific .

For myself training outside of Osteopathy with the Reach Approach fulfils  goals of my own  personal care, and its function and importance in respect of the human condition. This understanding is well applicable  in Osteopathic work .

I had already noticed that successful patients in pain management achieved these outcomes through lifestyle change, and not just through treatment or diagnosis

"The difference was often not simply the diagnosis:"

It was confidence.

It was understanding.

It was hope.

The ability to make meaningful changes long after the treatment session has finished, ensures sustainability  .  Reach Approach work reminded me that lasting change rarely comes from someone "fixing" another person. It comes when people begin to recognise their own capacity to grow, adapt and move forward.

"This is the part of my work that excites me most."

Coaching has a different purpose, than stating the way or methods to find relief or improve health .

It asks a different question, rather than asking only:

"What has happened to you?"

"What strengths already exist within you, and how can we help you use them to move towards the life you want to live?"

For a client in pain or challenged by stiffness , or postural challenge, a route in treatment can include only  bodywork  sessions, with no more to explore . However for some there are changes to make in diet , sleep , exercise and self management . This need for a deeper dive needs to be explored if the physical structure is to be maintained, we provide this through longer interactions at a fair price. This is available through request and part of a recovery plan which we will discuss with you during assessment.

I believe that every person already possesses remarkable resources."

Sometimes they are hidden beneath pain.

Sometimes beneath fear.

Sometimes beneath years of disappointment or self-doubt.

Sometimes the very qualities that appear to hold someone back—perfectionism, sensitivity, determination or caution—can become their greatest strengths when they are understood and directed wisely.

"My role is not to hand someone a new life."

My role is to help them recognise the strengths, values and abilities that may have been there all along, waiting to be discovered.

That is why coaching feels so hopeful and aligned to my Osteopathic practice

I have worked using manipulation as an active technique , myofascial release , cranial work and other passive techniques . Coaching has  extended my range of treatment to cover all ages, abilities and disabilities .

I see coaching as the  bridge between understanding and action. It is the place where insight becomes practice, where potential becomes behaviour and where people begin to trust themselves again. Whether your goal is overcoming persistent pain, rebuilding confidence after illness, improving your health, or simply becoming the best physical version of yourself, Coaching combined with Osteopathy  provides a space to learn, practice and reflect.

When our work together is complete, my hopes are that you leave with more than information. The plan set will allow you to manage progression ,  developed through my expertise and your own  personal experience.
